GEW highlights newest curing innovations

Robert Rae joins L&NW to discuss the intelligent advancements and company expansion taking place at GEW.

GEW, a leading supplier of UV LED and UV curing systems, has unveiled several new products designed to drive productivity for label converters. As sustainability, quality, and efficiency are highly prioritized in today’s converting shops, GEW has developed new technologies to meet industry demand.

To learn more about GEW’s newest developments, L&NW recently sat down with Robert Rae, Managing Director, GEW.

L&NW: Rob, can you tell us a little bit about what’s new at GEW in 2026?

RR: For GEW, we’re constantly investing in innovation. Not only do we have a new 5,500-square-meter factory ready to be unveiled next to our current factory in Crawley, UK, but we’ve also had a big R&D year where we’ve introduced numerous products to the market to help fill the gaps we have in our offering, such as DoseGuard, which was first introduced at Labelexpo Europe 2025, and Peak C, our UV C offering.

However, the biggest innovation from GEW this year is the EOS Power and Control system, which will be rolled out over the course of the next 12 months to replace our RHINO and RLT power and control platform. This represents innovation of the whole power infrastructure that drives our curing systems, and it brings innovation for both OEM customers and end users.

So, while our lamps fundamentally aren’t changing, everything behind them is. And it’s a complete revelation because we’re making it ourselves – in-house – in the UK, in our new factory. We’re making the cabinets, the distributions, the power supplies, etc. For this complete redesign, we’re coining the phrase, “Flexible Power, Intelligent Curing.” Flexible Power because OEMs can pick and choose what they need for their particular machine and integrate our product onto their platform far more deeply than they ever could do before. We are changing the scope of supply they’re able to buy. They’re able to control the power supplies with software. HMIs could morph into being on their single machine. They can put our power supplies inside their machine. They can control all that by software without any hardware connections so that they can receive a huge amount more internet of things telemetry back from the lamps.

And Intelligent Curing because we’re putting chips inside our lamp cassettes so that the lamps themselves become intelligent. They are recording so much more data than they ever did before about how they’re running, what they are, serialization, telemetry, and error codes and feedback, so that our OEMs will be able to use that data to feed information and process optimization to their customer base.

L&NW: It sounds like integration is a key focus for you right now?

RR: The UV system is historically a piece of peripheral equipment which sits alongside a machine. But customers want to see those two things integrate and be part of one machine, where the machine has access to all the information on all the peripheral equipment so that it can feed that process optimization to the customer. And the EOS system is much more open and flexible to enable our machine manufacturers to do that and deliver that service to their customers.

L&NW: But EOS can also be retrofitted on to existing machinery?

RR: Yes, absolutely it can be retrofitted. It will become part of our standard retrofit offering. For end users with no GEW UV curing equipment on their press, they would buy a turnkey UV and/or UV LED curing system, specified to their needs, powered by an EOS Power and Control system.

For customers with GEW equipment already on their press, they would have a choice. If they wanted GEW’s EOS Power and Control system, and the intelligent lamps that come with it, then they would need to retrofit their whole press, as EOS and the intelligent lamps are not backwards compatible with our RHINO and RLT systems.

However, we also support customers who want to upgrade their current RHINO/RLT system to UV LED. In many cases, it’s as simple as buying the UV LED cassettes and doing a system upgrade.

To ensure no customers are left behind, GEW will continue to support our RHINO and RLT power supplies for the foreseeable future, even when we transition our main production to EOS.

L&NW: So, this is a very significant move?

RR: For us, it’s a hugely significant move. Internal manufacturing, setting
that production up, a complete redesign of all the software, all the hardware that goes into it. But ultimately, the lamps are what delivers the light to, and dries and cures, the ink on the customer’s machine. And those lamp specifications have not significantly changed with the EOS introduction, even though they’ve now become intelligent. We’re excited by the possibilities that EOS brings.
